Research

The Economic studies largely relate to the agricultural problems of Bihar. Of late, a growing interest of the faculty members is discernible int he political economy of the state, institutional and infrastructural deficiencies in the economy. Some other areas of their preoccupations are evaluation and monitoring of various development and welfare programmes of the rural sector. The dynamics of rural economy are being probed in all its diversities with special reference to the state of Bihar. A number of research projects have been taken up having bearing on this theme.

The research interest of the Sociology faculty lies in the exploration of culture of poverty with special reference to the Scheduled castes and Scheduled tribes and in ascertaining the role of women and their status in society. Similarly, the impact of changing technology, industrialisation rural development and developmental planning on social structures receive attention of the faculty members of Sociology. From some time past, the faculty has developed experience and expertise in formulating, enacting, monitoring and evaluating various welfare and development programmes of government in the area of health, nutrition, children, women and other target groups. Problems of distributive justice, education and social stratifications constitute other important strand of research priority.

The research interests of the discipline of Social Psychology extend to group behaviour, leadership, social power. Child rearing practices and development of Child guidance and Counselling socio-psychological problems underlying education and decentralisation on Educational Governance, risk-taking and decision making behaviour, technical system in hospital organisations, and quality of life of physically challenged people, minorities participation in Bihar Assembly Election, student activism, and total revolution movement of Bihar and gender issues, and attitude towards dowry. The organisational issues, management problems, personnel development with reference to industrial units are yet another variant of their interest.

The faculty in the Political Science is devoted to the explanation of political progress and political dynamics especially in the State of Bihar. The themes for the study in brief include political parties, pressure groups, movement, leadership, state politics, politics at the grassroots, electoral processes, politics and stratification, politics among the weaker sections and violence. Administrative process and the management of development programmes in different spheres are the other priority. It also intends to provide for objective analysis of the planning and implementation of government programmes in respect of agriculture, health, education and welfare. Special emphasis is placed on administration at the district, block and panchayat levels with a view to suggest improvement in planning, coordination, supervision and execution of various programmes. Voluntary organizations constitute an important area of enquiry receiving attention of the faculty members. The faculty also specializes in the study of the institution of panchayati raj in the state. Human rights particularly child rights protection, child labour, bonded labour etc.

Stated precisely, the research activities of the Institute can be placed under the following categories:
  1. Research of one's own done by the academic staff.
  2. Research for the degree of PhD. Undertaken by Doctoral Fellows and other research scholars, supervised by the academic staff.
  3. Research projects initiated by the institute on social and economic matters, relating specially to Bihar, and
  4. Research projects sponsored and financed by external agencies including the ICSSR, NCER, Government of India, Government of Bihar, various public sector undertakings, different international bodies like the UNO, World Bank, ILO, WHO, UNICEF, IDRC, etc.
